Treasuring time-canister

Time is infinite, our life is finite, and we cannot stop the time, but can capture the treasuring moment that we had, memorised them forever, don’t let time just passed by. Therefore this time we aimed to design a project that can help people evoke the treasuring time. Personally what I have perceived that treasuring time is a particular period time that could be 2 second, 2 years, or a time in regular, they impact us emotionally or physically hence we want to keep it in our memory. Therefore I chose a period time that I just came to Australia, it’s the first time that I took airplane, it’s the first time that I travelled to another country, and lived by myself, everything is unfamiliar and everything is new, I’m learning new things, making new friends, gaining new experiences every day, and I am curious and exciting about every day, although sometimes it’s little bit homesick. Therefore the project that I designed is aimed to recall the emotions, experiences, memories that I had in that particular time.

My product is a canister and contains several bowls inside. The bowls called memory bowl, they were designed in different colours, which convey different emotions, and inside of the bowl I write anything that can help me evoke the treasuring moment that I had, it could be a letter, a picture, or a word. For example, I wrote ‘Mi lai’ in a bowl, because she is my first friend in Australia, and every time when I read this bowl I’ll remember the time that I spend with her. For the canister, it has a hole on the lead, every time you have to shake the canister that allow one bowl comes out in random, you are curious about which one is going to come out. This feeling is just like the time in Australia, I was exciting about what is going to happen in next day.

The canister is designed in a small size, and well fit into your hands; you can to put any where you want, and the colours are mainly in bright warm primary colours, which are my impressions of Australia.

I think that your project suits the brief well. In relation to something that reminds the user of a point in time it is very successful. The fact that you have designed it for yourself personally allows for the product to be emotionally charged. It is unfortunate that the product would be nearly meaningless to anyone except yourself. To diversify the target audience maybe instead of having your friends name on one of the balls, you could have the Chinese (or whichever language) symbol for friend. This would allow a wider audience to relate to the design.
I like how each ball falls randomly. It could be a very comforting design to use. Whenever you feel lonely or homesick you could simply withdraw one of the balls that would envoke a positive memory of your Australian experience.
I like the use of bright colours. Overall I feel that the design is a mechanism for reflecting on positive, happy points in time which s always a good basis. I will say finally that I feel the design could have been developed further to appeal to a far broader audience. Otherwise, great work.

hello
i like the way you have approached this design in terms of making little balls that remind you of past experiences.
i like how you evoke excitment throughno knowing which ball will fall out and which memory will be reremembered.
i really like the colours of the little balls they are very pretty.
i do think that you could have made the glass jar lid alittle more interesting or the glass jar itself.
with the balls i wasnt sure if you wrote in it yourself or if the user wrote what ever they wanted to remember.
i would suggest that the better design would be to let the user write whatever they wanted in it rather then giving them something that was already written in. this would make it more personal to them.
other then that great design and good approach to the brief.

I think that you have really thought about this project in relation to the brief, ie. capturing an occurance in time and u've really captured yourself, in relation to emotions and experiences all in one product. Which i think is fanstastic! And perhaps a great product that can be reproducible in the market, whereby consumers can place their own memories/notes in their own ball capsales... and be reminded of a particular time.

The different colours of the balls, is a great idea.. as it can trigger the mood you felt at that time of ie. meeting someone. Unfortantly tho, this product seems like it would be stored in one place, after you've visited all the memories at a time. i.e. because the balls (6 or so)have fixed messages, they can't be changed, therefore the user can't continually add new memories or use the product, which is a shame.

The canister with a hole, whereby each ball comes out unexpectably, evoking new expereinces, relates really well with your own experiences and your concept. However the design, of the canister itself could of been more aesthetically pleasing to try and capture the concept 'treauring time' ie. you have all these beautiful memories yet, they are in a clear plastic bottle. A non-transparent canister might of been more interesting, whereby the balls coming from the canister at random would be really unexpected.
or an interesting form

Overall, i think you've done a really great job! Well done

hey dan,

awesome design dude. i love the use of various colours, really appeals to your target market. the whole idea of having tiny bits of memory collecting is just great. the only thing i would add is maybe for a crazier design for the bottle/canister that holds the bowls. or a more radical way of slotting the bowls into the canister. but enough of that, great job all round i must say.
